The electronic cigarette industry has come along way in the last couple of years and like every emerging market things are changing fast. A few years ago the selection of vape kits was relatively small. You had the cig-a-likes and a few EGO style batteries with a CE4 clearomiser. The biggest choice was “which battery size should I go for?” Well move forward a couple of years and there are now 100’s of different styles of starter kits and hardware. Ranging from simple CE4/CE5’s to rebuild-able atomiser tanks and drippers (RBA’s & RDA’s). There is also a huge selection of batteries, some of which can control the wattage and others that can control the temperature of the coils. There are also mods with removable batteries and some with fixed batteries. Which are the best vape mods that would suit you? That depends on what vaping experience you are looking for, but hopefully this short guide will help you make up your mind.
Low Maintenance Kits
If you are looking for an electronic cigarette that is easy to maintain, easy to use and is not too expensive, then an EGO style kit could be for you. These generally consist of a battery (a little larger than a fountain pen) and a disposable clearomiser. You unscrew the mouthpiece from the clearomiser and fill it with e-liquid, leave it for a minute or two, screw it on to the battery and vape away. An EGO battery is a manual battery so you have to press and hold a button while taking a drag. Once the heating element (coil) in the clearomiser burns out you just throw it away and buy another.
These are still easy to use and similar to EGO style kits but most clearomiser have replaceable heating elements that can be bought individually or in packs of 5. The best example of these been the Kanger EMOW or the Aspire Nautilus Mini. The batteries also vary in size and function. The main styles are box mods (like the eLeaf iStick) or tube mods like the Vision Spinner V2. These both have adjustable power outputs that are changed via a button or dial. This means that you can change the wattage or voltage to increase flavour or vapour production.
Advanced Kits and Sub Ohming
There are more advanced kits available which have rebuild-able tanks. This means that you can build your own coils in different sizes at different resistances (measured in ohm’s). There are a few styles but the main ones are rebuild-able tank atomisers (RBA or RTA for short) which have a reservoir where the e-liquid is stored and rebuild-able dripping atomisers (RDA) where you drip a couple of drop of e-liquid on to the coils. Coils can be built from different types of resistance wire such as Kanthal and Nichrome. You can also use different wicking material like cotton and silica.
Sub ohming is where the resistance of the wire in the tank or dripper is less than 1 ohm. You can buy pre-made coils that are generally around 0.5 ohms. The most popular sub ohm tanks are the Kanger Sub Tank and the Freemax Starre Pro.
