The Difference Between Freebase and Nicotine Salts

All vape juices are made using three core raw materials to make the vape juice base itself, Vegetable Glycerine (VG) Propylene Glycol and flavour concentrates to make the flavour of the vape juice. There are two different types of nicotine that can be added, the first one we will talk about is Freebase nicotine. Freebase nicotine vape juices have been around since the very start of when vaping first became a thing, and it's just as popular with vapers worldwide today as it was almost a decade ago. 

Freebase nicotine vape juices provide a strong nicotine hit as well as a punchy throat hit, and the throat hit increases in intensity the higher the nicotine strength of the vape juice.

However, this can come across as quite harsh on the throat if a high nicotine strength is being used, as well as dulling down the flavour of the concentrates as well.

But in recent years, there's another type of nicotine which has taken off and many vapers nowadays prefer to use vape juice made with this, and of course we are talking about nicotine salts. 

The nicotine salts are made by using a traditional freebase nicotine base, but then adding a weakened acid to it which in turn neutralises the pH levels of the nicotine. This reduces the harshness of the nicotine allowing for a higher strength content to be vaped and it not being harsh on the throat. 

The nicotine salts also enhances the flavour of the concentrates used rather than dulling them down, so it's quite clear to see why so many vapers now prefer nicotine salts as their preferred vape juice!

How To Choose The Right Nicotine Strength

Picking the right nicotine strength in your vape juice is a crucial part of the process when quitting and it can essentially make or break you having a successful transition away from smoking. We've explained this topic in depth in our blog that explains everything you need to know, but we'll go over some key points here that you need to know. 

The nicotine strengths of vape juices go up in increments, like with Freebase vape juices you have 6mg, 12mg and 18mg. And with nicotine salts, you have 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg. These numbers relate to how many mg of nicotine there are per ml of vape juice, and you'll want to choose a nicotine strength that correlates to how many cigarettes you smoked in the course of a day. 

For example, if you were a heavy smoker of 20 cigarettes a day, you're dependency for nicotine is likely going to be quite high and you're going to need to use a high nicotine strength vape juice to give you an equivalent amount of nicotine to ensure that you don't get any form of nicotine withdrawal symptoms so an 18mg freebase or 20mg nicotine salt would be the best option for you. 

On the contrary, if you were only a light smoker of around 10 cigarettes a day, your dependency for nicotine is not going to be that high and you'll only need to use a lower nicotine strength in your vape juice, so a 6mg freebase or 10mg nicotine salts would be the best choice for you to use. 

It's always better to start off at a higher strength and then work your way down until you find the right nicotine strength for you. If you started off too low, you may find that it won't be enough nicotine to cure your cravings and the temptation to dual use (smoke and vape) may become too much to resist.
