Key Information You Need To Know
- WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment - it is the UK's fastest-growing type of waste.
- Products classified as WEEE, also called e-waste, include vape batteries, pods and coils.
- These products can not be discarded in general waste, but millions are thrown away incorrectly each week.
- WEEE should be recycled - you can do this by taking these items to special e-waste recycling points.
- You can find WEEE recycling points accross the UK, at council recycling centres and retail locations.
- As we only sell products online, it is your legal responsibility to dispose of your vapes in the right way.
- LiQuid does not process e-waste, instead we contribute to the UK Gov Distributor Take Back Scheme.
- The money we pay to the Distributor Take Back Scheme (DTS) funds council recycling points you can use.
- Through DTS & environmental compliance specialists Beyondly, LiQuid complies with WEEE regulations.
WEEE & WBAR Explained
As responsible manufacturers and retailers of vape devices which contain batteries, LiQuid is obliged to comply with UK regulations covering the safe disposal and management of waste electronic equipment.
What Does WEEE Mean?
What Does WEEE Mean?
WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
It refers to any discarded or unwanted product that operates using an electrical plug, cable, or battery.
Also commonly known as e-waste, this includes everything from large household appliances to small personal electronics like the vape kits we sell in our store.
Typically, WEEE is broken down into several categories:
- Large Appliances: Washing machines, refrigerators, and ovens.
- Small Appliances: Toasters, hair dryers, and vacuum cleaners.
- IT & Telecoms: Laptops, mobile phones, and tablets.
- Consumer Electronics: Televisions, gaming consoles, and stereos.
- Other: Lighting, electronic toys, power tools, and vapes.
As LiQuid acts as a retailer of our own-brand vape kits, and as a reseller of 3rd party vape kits, we must comply with WEEE regulations.
Vape Pods & Coils Are Also Classified As WEEE:
Despite not featuring a battery or electrical components, replacement vape pods and coils also fall under the same WEEE umbrella as vape batteries under UK law, and must be disposed of in the same way.
UK law treats batteries, pods and coils as the same product type because of the nicotine residue from e-liquid left inside discarded pods/coils, and because they can only be used with an electronic cigarette.
You can learn more about WEEE by visiting the .Gov website.
What Does WBAR Mean?
What Does WBAR Mean?
WBAR refers to the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations (typically the 2009 UK legislation).
It is a system designed to manage the collection, treatment, and recycling of waste batteries.
Under a "producer responsibility" framework, battery manufacturers bear the cost and responsibility of properly recycling their products at the end of their life.
If products are only sold online (like here at LiQuid) the business does not have to accept and process waste batteries. Instead, we must pay into the Distributor Take-Back Scheme (DTS), a UK Gov scheme that funds council recycling centres our customers can use to dispose of all types of WEEE.
We are legally obliged, however, to provide guidance to customers on how to safely and responsibly dispose of their e-waste.
As we manufacture and sell our own-branded vape kits, like the OPEL device, we must comply with WBAR regulations.
Key Components Of WBAR:
Producer Responsibility: Companies that manufacture or import batteries are financially and physically responsible for funding their collection, treatment, and recycling.
Separate Collection: It mandates that waste batteries must not be thrown into regular domestic waste. Consumers must be directed to separate battery collection points.
Battery Categorisation: The regulations govern three primary categories of batteries: Portable (e.g., AA, AAA, vape batteries), Automotive (e.g., car batteries), and Industrial.
Registration and Reporting: Battery producers are required to register with their respective environmental agencies, track the volume of batteries they place on the market, and ensure they meet specific recycling targets.
You can learn more about WBAR regulations by visiting the .Gov website.
How To Dispose Of Vapes: The Wheelie-Bin Symbol Explained
Any relevant electronic equipment sold in the UK must feature a crossed-out bin symbol on its packaging or on the equipment itself.
This applies to the vape kits, vape pods and coils you buy from us here at LiQuid, which should always feature the symbol on the product packaging, and often the battery/pod/coil itself.
What It Means For You:
Do not bin them:
Disposing of electronics bearing this symbol in general waste is illegal and hazardous. It risks toxic materials reaching landfills and prevents precious metals from being recovered. There have been many cases of serious fires and explosions caused by batteries, like those used in vape kits, that have been discarded in general waste and crushed in bin wagons or at landfill sites - please help us, and the environment, by disposing of your vape waste responsibly.
Where to recycle your vape batteries, pods & coils:
Almost all local councils provide recycling centres for e-waste where you can throw away vapes. If this is not practical for you, most major supermarkets and other local retail locations provide specialised bins for e-waste. You can safely throw away vape batteries, pods and coils at these locations.

There are a number of handy online services that will show you the locations of your nearest vape waste recycling/disposal points based on your postcode. Click the button below to find yours now:
Vape Recycling FAQs
Common questions our customers ask about how to safely throw away their vapes.
Can you put vapes in the bin?
Can you put vapes in the bin?
No, you should never put vape batteries, coils or pods in your general waste bin. Look out for the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol, which should appear on all of these products.
Items with this symbol are classified under UK law as WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment), which means they must be disposed of and ideally recycled at specific locations; do not throw away vapes in the normal bin.
They contain harmful chemicals and can be a serious fire risk if sent to a landfill, and precious metals used in their components cannot be recovered and reused.
Can vape coils be recycled?
Can vape coils be recycled?
Yes, just like vape batteries, vape coils are classed as WEEE and often feature the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol. This means they should be recycled in the same way.
You can drop them in e-waste bins at many retail locations around the UK, or at local council recycling centres.
Do not throw away vape coils in your normal bin.
Can vape pods be recycled?
Can vape pods be recycled?
Yes, vape pods, both with built-in and removable coils, can be recycled.
Like vape batteries and vape coils, they are classified as WEEE, and feature the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol. This means they must be disposed of in the same e-waste bins or recycling centres across the UK.
Do not throw away vape pods in your normal bin.
How do I recycle a disposble vape?
How do I recycle a disposble vape?
Disposable vapes are treated like any other vape device/equipment under WEEE regulations, and carry the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol.
This means they should only be discarded in e-waste bins or local recycling centres.
As disposable vapes are most often a single, sealed unit, they should be placed in the appropriate recycling bins whole. Do not try to open them up to separate components.
Disposable vapes are increasingly rare in the UK since their official ban in June 2025, but many people are still using up old stock purchased before this ban took effect.
If you are still using disposable vapes, it is very important that you dispose of them responsibly, to minimise the damage they have already done to the environment at their peak of popularity.
Can I recycle a damaged vape battery?
Can I recycle a damaged vape battery?
Yes, even swollen or damaged vape batteries can be recycled. You must treat them with extreme caution, however, as they pose a major fire risk. You must never put a damaged battery in household rubbish.
How To Handle & Recycle A Damaged Vape Battery:
- Never use it: Stop using the device immediately.
- Isolate it: Place the damaged battery in a non-flammable container, such as a metal box or, if possible, something filled with dry sand. Keep it outdoors or in a well-ventilated area away from children, pets and combustible materials.
- Tape the terminals: If you can, place a piece of non-conductive tape (like electrical tape) over the battery's contact points to prevent sparking.
- Do not dismantle: If the battery is built-in (like most modern pod vape kits), do not attempt to pry it open.
- Take it to a facility: As soon as you are able, take the isolated battery straight to a designated local recycling centre. Do not drop damaged batteries in e-waste bins at supermarkets or retail locations, as these are only for intact batteries.
To safely dispose of your damaged battery, use the Recycle Your Electricals locator to find the nearest recycling point that accepts hazardous and damaged lithium-ion batteries in your area.
Can I recycle my e-liquid bottles?
Can I recycle my e-liquid bottles?
Yes, you can recycle your e-liquid bottles.
Unlike vape batteries, pods and coils, e-liquid bottles are not classed as WEEE, which means you can recycle them at home.
Almost all e-liquid bottles are made from PET, HDPE, or LDPE plastics, which are widely recyclable.
To recycle an e-liquid bottle at home, there are some important steps you must follow to do so correctly:
1. Disposing of leftover e-liquid
- You must never pour waste vape juice down your household drain. The flavour chemicals and nicotine content can contaminate water treatment systems, damage your pipes, and harm aquatic life.
- Instead, soak up leftover e-liquid using paper towels or rags.
- You can then throw the saturated towels/rags in your general waste bin.
2. Preparing your bottles
- Make sure the bottle is completely empty.
- Rinse the bottle with warm water.
- Remove the cap, tamper-evident ring, and nozzle/nib - these are most often made from mixed plastics that can only be thrown away in your general waste, not recycling.
3. Recycle Your Bottle
- Once all the above steps have been completed, you can now safely throw your old e-liquid bottle in your plastic/mixed recycling bin.
Don't forget:
Local councils do not all have the same rules when it comes to recycling. There can be a lot of variation in which bins to use, and what can and cannot be collected and processed.
Click here to visit the UK Gov page that can help you check your local council's recycling policies.
Can LiQuid recycle my old vapes for me?
Can LiQuid recycle my old vapes for me?
Unfortunately, no, we do not accept, nor do we have the facilities to process returned e-waste like vape batteries, pods and coils.
Under UK law, we are classed as a small distributor. This is because we only sell our products online, not in physical stores.
This means, instead of providing a take-back service ourselves, we are registered with the UK Gov's official Distributor Take-Back Scheme (DTS).
We pay an annual fee to the Government via the DTS that covers our e-waste (WEEE) obligations each year. This money goes towards supporting local council recycling centres that you must use to recycle your vape-related e-waste.
Through the DTS, and our environmental compliance partner, Beyondly, LiQuid fully complies with all WEEE and WBAR regulations.
Our only legal obligation beyond this is to provide clear guidance for our customers on where/how to safely recycle WEEE themselves - which is why this page exists.
