The History and Evolution of Nic Pouches

Oral nicotine products have been around a lot longer than you may realise, with the first inception spanning right back to the 17th century!

Over the centuries, there's been significant advancement in the production and marketing of oral nicotine products, which has produced the brands of nicotine pouches sold on the market today and that are globally known brands.

We take a look at the history of nicotine pouches, taking a deep dive into their origins.

A Brief History of Snus

Snus (pronounced Snoose) originates from Sweden, and the first inception of it dates right back to the 1800s when it was first designed exclusively for use by Swedish royalty.

Loose-leaf moist tobacco was put into small pouches to offer the Swedish royals a smoke-free alternative for tobacco and nicotine consumption which could be used at their discretion.

It wasn't until the 1970s that the use of snus pouches became more frequent within society, with different companies emerging and offering their own versions of moist tobacco pouches to the general public.

However, it wasn't long before concerns started being raised over the health risks that Snus pouches could pose due to the fact that they contained tobacco leaf as well as carcinogens, which can lead to serious health conditions such as cancer.

An EU-wide ban on Snus was initiated in 1992 due to health concerns, combined with the dislike of aggressive marketing techniques from a specific brand of Snus, and they still remain banned to this day.

This ban opened a gap in the market, however, for the creation of another oral nicotine product which doesn't involve tobacco...

How Snus Helped Create Nicotine Pouches

Despite there being a gap in the market, it wasn't until 2008 when the first nicotine pouch brand was registered (a brand called Zonnic) but they had been in production since the early 2000s by a brand called Niconovum.

This brand had previously created and marketed Nicotine Replacement Therapy products such as nicotine lozenges and nicotine gums to aid smokers in their quest to quit cigarettes.

It was quite clear to see when looking at nicotine pouches that they had been inspired by snus pouches in the way they shared the same small, sleek pouch design, but obviously, nicotine pouches only contained powdered nicotine and were made to be tobacco-free. How Nicotine Pouches Have Evolved Into What They Are Today

After seeing the first year's success of Niconovum and the 'Zonnic' brand, RJ Reynolds, otherwise known as British American Tobacco, acquired ownership of Niconovum in 2009, and this is where the market for nicotine pouches really began to flourish.

The Scandinavian-born product began being pushed out onto the global market, and it wasn't long before another big tobacco company got involved, and Philip Morris International acquired Swedish Match, an already established brand and manufacturer of nicotine pouches. And it was from this that the brand Zyn was launched, which saw incredible market growth mainly in the USA, whilst also being introduced to Europe.

What Does The Future Look Like?

The nicotine pouch category has evolved rapidly over the last decade, transforming from a niche alternative to traditional tobacco products into one of the fastest-growing nicotine sectors in the UK and Europe.

Looking ahead, innovation is likely to remain a key driver of growth. Manufacturers continue to develop new flavour combinations, more comfortable pouch formats and a wider variety of nicotine strengths to suit different user preferences. Slim pouches have already become the industry standard, and future developments are expected to focus on improving comfort, consistency and flavour delivery.

Consumer awareness is also increasing. As more adult nicotine users seek smoke-free and tobacco-free alternatives, nicotine pouches are becoming more widely available through specialist retailers, convenience stores and supermarkets.

At the same time, competition between brands is encouraging greater product variety. Established names such as VELO, ZYN and Nordic Spirit now compete alongside newer brands including FUMi, Pablo, Killa and LiQuid, giving consumers more choice than ever before.

While nobody can predict exactly how the market will develop, one thing is clear: nicotine pouches have secured their place in the modern nicotine landscape. What began as an evolution of Swedish snus has become a global category in its own right, with continued growth expected in the years ahead.
