What is in a Nicotine Pouch?

The biggest thing to point out when it comes to what is in a nicotine pouch is that they do not contain any form, nor trace of tobacco whatsoever.

The pouches which contain tobacco are called snus - we will explain the difference further down the page.

Nicotine pouches are made from a fibrous material (think tea bag type of material) and inside each pouch is a specially created powdered nicotine formula.

What makes up the powdered nicotine solution is of course nicotine, as well as pharma/food-grade ingredients such as fillers which are essential to ensure the pouch works how it should. Finally, flavourings are added accordingly to make them taste how they are described!

How Do Nicotine Pouches Work?

Nicotine pouches are classed as “oral nicotine products” and this is because the pouches are placed into the mouth for the nicotine to absorb.

In the opening few minutes of the pouch being put in place and the nicotine absorbing, this may give off a slight tingling sensation. Which is perfectly normal. If you are new to using nicotine pouches, it may feel a bit peculiar to start with, but it doesn’t last long.

The pouch is then kept in place for however long it takes for your urge for nicotine to be suitably met. It's then disposed of and this cycle is repeated every time you feel those urges creeping back in.

A pouch is normally placed between the upper lip and gum, where it rests in place for the duration of use.

Moisture from the mouth activates the pouch, allowing absorption through the gum.

Where do Nicotine Pouches Originate From?

Nicotine pouches are based on an ancient alternative to smoking and chewing tobacco that was originally reserved for Swedish royalty. While nic pouches are a relatively new arrival on UK shelves, the concept has been around for decades. It has evolved significantly in that time, becoming both safer and more effective.

Swedish snus was the first iteration of a pouch-based nicotine product, but it still contains actual tobacco. Which can still cause mild to serious issues, from mouth ulcers to oral cancer. Modern nicotine pouches, however, do not contain any tobacco; instead, they use a nicotine extract suspended in a powder which carries a much lesser risk of health complications when compared to smoking.

We have a blog discussing the history and evolution of nicotine pouches if you'd like to read more about their origins.

Different Nicotine Pouch Sizes Explained

Nicotine pouches are available in a range of formats designed to suit different comfort preferences and usage styles. While pouch size can influence how a pouch feels under the lip, it does not necessarily determine nicotine strength.

Mini Pouches

Mini nicotine pouches are the smallest format available. They are designed to be highly discreet and lightweight, making them a popular choice for users who prefer a less noticeable fit. Despite their compact size, mini pouches can still deliver a satisfying nicotine experience depending on the product.

Slim Pouches

Slim pouches are now the most common format on the market and are used by many leading brands, including Nordic Spirit, VELO, FUMi, Pablo and Killa. They offer a balance of comfort, discretion and flavour delivery, making them suitable for both new and experienced users.

Importantly, slim pouches are available across a wide range of nicotine strengths. Whether you're choosing a lower-strength pouch or a high-strength option, there is a good chance it will use a slim format.

Regular and Large Pouches

Some nicotine pouches are available in larger formats, often referred to as regular, large or regular plus. These pouches contain more filling material and may provide a fuller feel under the lip. While less common than slim pouches in today's market, they remain available from selected manufacturers.

Does Pouch Size Affect Nicotine Strength?

Not necessarily. Nicotine strength is determined by the amount of nicotine contained within the pouch, rather than the pouch size itself. A slim pouch can be available in both lower and higher nicotine strengths, while larger formats are not automatically stronger.

When choosing a nicotine pouch, it's usually more important to focus on the nicotine strength and flavour profile than the physical pouch size. If you're unsure which strength is right for you, take a look at our guide on What Nicotine Pouch Strength Should I Choose?

Choosing the Right Nicotine Pouch Strength

Choosing the right nicotine pouch strength is one of the most important parts of getting a comfortable experience. Nicotine pouches are available in a wide range of strengths, from lower options suited to lighter nicotine users through to stronger pouches designed for experienced users.

If you are new to nicotine pouches, it is usually best to start with a lower or medium strength and adjust gradually if needed. Choosing a pouch that is too strong may feel uncomfortable, particularly if you are not used to oral nicotine products.

Nicotine strength can be shown in different ways depending on the brand. Some products display the nicotine content per pouch, while others may show nicotine per gram. This means two products can appear similar but feel different in use, so always check the product details before buying.

As a general guide, lower strengths such as 3mg to 6mg are often preferred by lighter nicotine users, while 8mg to 11mg pouches suit many regular users. Higher strengths such as 12mg to 16mg are generally better suited to experienced nicotine users, while very strong pouches should only be considered by those with a higher nicotine tolerance.

Your ideal strength depends on your current nicotine use, how often you use pouches and how strong you prefer the nicotine sensation to feel. If you are unsure, start lower and move up only if required.

Better suited to experienced nicotine users with a higher tolerance.

Please note: nicotine strength can be listed as mg per pouch or mg/g depending on the brand, so always check the individual product information before use.

How to Use a Nicotine Pouch

If you’ve never used a nicotine pouch before, it may seem a bit daunting to understand how to use them and make sure you get it right, but thankfully, it’s not overly complicated and once you’ve used your first pouch, you’ll see that for yourself!

When you get a fresh and new can of nicotine pouches, they will be sealed with a sticker around the rim of the can.

This seal has perforations which you can break by either running your fingernail around the outside or you can pop the lid off from the top compartment of the can and use the edge to break the seal of the can.

Then gently prise the lid open and you’ll be greeted with the sight of a full can of nicotine pouches ready for you to use!

Take a pouch out from the can and give it a gentle roll between your thumb and fingertip. This isn’t something you have to do, but it can help break up any clumping which may have formed in the pouch.

Nicotine Pouch Placement Icon

Place the nicotine pouch into your mouth so that it rests between your upper lip and gum, normally on one side of your mouth rather than in the middle. This is so that it remains comfortable when in place.

Nicotine Pouch Wait Icon

The nicotine will then be absorbed through the gum and into the bloodstream. There will be a tingling sensation when you first put it in place. Don’t panic, as this is perfectly normal, and this feeling will subside within a couple of minutes.

Nicotine Pouches Disposal Icon

When finished, simply take it out of your mouth and dispose of the used pouch in the bin, or if you aren’t near a bin, you can use the compartment on the top of the lid of your can of nicotine pouches, as this is what it’s designed for!

How Long You Should Use a Nicotine Pouch For

The time frame for how long you should keep a nicotine pouch in place for is entirely up to you, once you feel that your urges for nicotine have dwindled down, you can take the pouch out and dispose of it.

The tingling effect we mentioned above should last for around 3-5 minutes, this is the peak for the absorption time so we would definitely recommend keeping the pouch in for at least this duration. The average time people tend to keep nic pouches in place for is around 30-45 minutes, but it can be up to 60 minutes.

One of the perks of using a nicotine pouch is that you have full control over how long it stays in place for. One thing to look out for is the recommended time given by the manufacturer as some nic pouches will be designed to only be in for 30 minutes as they give a more "rapid" release of nicotine, where some are more steady and gradual.

Nicotine Pouches vs Other Nicotine Products

Nicotine pouches offer the perfect alternative for smoking tobacco products as there is considerably less risk involved with using them. When a cigarette is lit, it’s been proven to produce over 7,000 different chemicals, and at least 70 of those are known to be toxic or carcinogenic. When using a nicotine pouch, there is no production of such chemicals, as pouches don't contain them and are completely smoke-free with no inhalation required for the nicotine to enter your bloodstream. This leads us nicely into the next point: due to the fact they do not involve any inhaling nor do they omit any smoke or vapour, they’re also a great alternative to using e-cigarettes as well.

The nicotine from a nicotine pouch absorbs into the bloodstream very fast, giving almost instantaneous curbing for nicotine cravings and this can work to your advantage if you’re looking for a quick and punchy nicotine hit that you previously haven’t been able to get from smoking or vaping.

Whilst not recognized as an official form of nicotine replacement therapy, using nic pouches to help you quit smoking may also be beneficial compared to traditional methods due to the quick nicotine absorption.

Nicotine pouches offer the most discreet way to consume nicotine by being smoke and vapour free, plus, you can use them on the go, wherever you are and whenever you want. Nicotine pouches are also the perfect companion if you are a vaper, as you can still use them alongside your vape device to get your nicotine fix. Use your vape where it’s permitted, and use nicotine pouches where you cannot, the dream combination!

Nicotine Pouches Are Not Snus!

There is a lot of confusion between what snus and nicotine pouches actually are, with plenty of people assuming they are one and the same. Thanks in no small part to misinformed social media sources who use nic pouches and describe them as snus!

The reality is that while the two are similar, they are fundamentally different. Snus is actually illegal in the UK and contains tobacco plant material. Nic pouches do not contain tobacco, only a nicotine extract, and actually pose less health risks as a result, and are of course, legal to buy and sell here in the UK.

They are used in the same way, but the dark brown snus should never be mixed up with white nicotine pouches like those in our LiQuid nicotine Pouch range!
