How to Know If You're Using The Wrong Vape Coil
Different types of vape coils are built to work with and handle various types of e-liquid and different vape kits. This isn't always made immediately clear when purchasing separate vape kit parts, so it's good to be aware of what your device requires and functions best with. In this blog, we will explain the most common signs of using the wrong vape coil and how to determine what vape coil you need instead.

Why Using The Right Coil is Important
The coil is essentially the meeting point between your vape device's battery and pod. As the coil is used to heat your e-liquid, it is important to ensure you're using the right one. Coils with too high or low resistance will struggle, heating e-liquid too excessively or not enough, leading to device issues or coils burning out faster than necessary.
By using the right coil, you'll be saving yourself time and money whilst keeping your vaping experience at its best. Using the wrong coil will at best hinder performance and at worst, cause your device to fail.
4 Key Signs You Are Using The Wrong Vape Coil
Before your coil fails early, there may be signs that suggest something is wrong. It's best to get familiarised with these signs before you run into trouble, as damaging your device parts is quite easily preventable. We've listed some of the main indicators that you may be using the wrong coil for your device below:
Your Coil Doesn't Fit Into the Device
The easiest and fastest solution to a coil being wrong is if it doesn’t fit. If your coil doesn’t fit into the tank or pod, it is likely the wrong type for your device. This isn’t always clearly obvious, but if your coil doesn't fit in, make sure to check the coil itself, or the package that came with it. If it's a different brand or version than your device, it will be unlikely to fit, nor work with your vape kit.
Error Messages/ Device Won't Fire Up
If your device doesn’t properly fire up, or displays a “check atomiser” warning, there’s a very good chance that you’re using the wrong pod – most commonly one that has an ohm rating that isn’t suitable for the device’s battery power output. For example, 0.4ohm pods can only be used in high-tech devices such as the Vaporesso Xros 5 or Xros Pro, due to their high-wattage requirements to function. This can lead to confusion, as these pods can still insert into the device but will not function appropriately, delivering only minimal vapour and muted flavour.
Coil Burnout/Spitting/Gurgling
Another common issue, particularly with beginner vapers, is mismatching types of e-liquid with coils. If you notice your coil is regularly burning out, flooding or bumping into similar issues, you may be using an incompatible type of e-liquid with it. High-VG e-liquid is the most demanding and will cause most issues when paired with low-wattage devices, or coils designed for 50-50 freebase or nic salt vape juice. Alternatively, if you’re noticing e-liquid being consumed too quickly, coil flooding or coil burnout, you may be using a coil for HVG e-liquid. Coils designed for HVG e-liquid have larger wicking ports, allowing more to seep through and thus heating more efficiently in the process. This is unnecessary for 50/50 e-liquid, which heats much more easily.
Issues With General Performance
If you’re having problems with general performance, such as flavour or vapour production, this isn’t always a sign of a bad or burned coil. Though it can be, it’s worth checking the options that cater towards your device. If you’re using a pod device with nic salts, but a 1.2ohm coil designed for freebase nicotine, the flavour and vapour will be thinner for this reason. To fix this, check for sub-ohm, preferably RDTL coils. As these coils are designed for nic salts, they will provide the best possible flavour and vapour production, whilst being less likely to fail.

Conclusion
It is best practice to always check and research which coil pairs best with your device and e-liquid, ideally before making a purchase. Although it's possible to use different brands of e-liquid and devices together, actual device parts are not as flexible, and will need to be from the same brand, and oftentimes the same line of product.
Where coils will inevitably fail, preparing and choosing the right equipment will ensure a smoother vaping experience and less need to switch out parts. Always ensure your e-liquid type and coil are compatible before use.
